We investigate the effects of spatial inhomogeneities on the entanglement ofmodes of strongly correlated systems in the framework of small Fermi-Hubbardchains. We find regimes where entanglement is strongly enhanced by the presenceof inhomogeneities. This contrasts recent reports of entanglement destructiondue to inhomogeneities. We further study this phenomenon using concepts ofDensity Functional Theory and, thus, provide a general recipe for theprediction of entanglement enhancement in nanostructures. We find enhancementof up to ~24%, as compared to impurity-free chains.
